Cadillac, which is owned by GM, has long been distinguished as the
company's upscale brand.
Cadillac began in 1899 as the Detroit Automobile Company. In 1902 it was renamed Cadillac after its original founder. Early Cadillacs were modest by today's standards, and included the single-cylinder Model A. Cadillac introduced its first four-cylinder engine three years later. In 1908, a successful Cadillac was bought by William Durant, who wanted the make to be General Motors' upmarket brand. Under General Motors' ownership, Cadillac became the first car to introduce a car with a V8 engine. Cadillac has always featured luxurious styling, and Cadillacs were known during the 1950s for their flamboyant tail fins. Cadillac fins began modestly, but models in subsequent years became longer, lower, and wider, with more extreme tail fins. While tail fins are no longer in vogue today, Cadillacs are still known for being large and powerful. Their wide range of models, from the sporty XLR to the durable Escalade SUV, are designed to appeal to a wide variety of people.
