One of South Korea's best-known car manufacturers, Hyundai got its start
in 1968, when it assembled British Ford cars and trucks. The company
built its first car five years later with the help of British financial
backing.
The first car that Hyundai introduced was the Pony, a rear-wheel drive vehicle which became known for its reliability. Although its styling was updated throughout the years, the Pony was one of Hyundai's staple vehicles for many years. Today, the Hyundai Pony is more commonly known in the United States as the Excel.
Hyundais were exported to North American beginning in the mid-1980s, and for a while was the fastest growing export brand in the U.S. In addition to the Excel, Hyundai continued to introduce models designed for a wide variety of needs, including the Sonata, the S-Coupe, the Amica, the Accent, and the Elantra.
