The Swallow Sidecar company was founded in 1922; it first used the Jaguar
name in 1935, but the company name was not formally changed to Jaguar
until 1945. Initially headed by Sir William Lyons, Jaguar became
known for producing sporty, stylish cars that weren't prohibitively
expensive. Jaguar used adapted Standard engines until 1948, when it
introduced its first completely in-house engine. Early models that
were very popular included the 1948 XK120 and the 1961 E-Type. The
Jaguar C-Type won the French endurance race in 1951, while the D-type won
in 1953, 1955, 1956, and 1957. In 1960 Jaguar bought British Daimler
Motor Company, and the following year introduced the E-Type, perhaps
Jaguar's most well-known car due to its outstanding performance, curvy
good looks, and reasonable price.
Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation in 1966, and was eventually taken over by Ford in 1989. Today, Jaguar is known for its classic, retro styling, and upscale image.
