Just like the Jeep is to America, the Land Rover is to Britain.
For more than half a century, these hardy four-wheel drive vehicles
have been manufactured in Birmingham, Britain's automobile capital.
Interestingly enough, the Land Rover was not meant to be a rugged-four wheel drive vehicle. Initially, the Rover company made family vehicles. But then, in 1936, it was invited to join Britain's rearmament program. This allowed them a new factory to carry out government contracts, with the promise that the company would be allowed to buy the factory when the war was over. At the end of the war, Rover had a large factory in Solihull, but did not have a mass-production car to manufacture. Responding to a huge demand for farm machinery, the Rover company decided to build a vehicle that could cope with all aspects of farm life. The goal? To build a better Jeep. Today, the Land Rover is still a popular four-wheel drive vehicle known for its versatility, though it is more likely used on suburban streets than on the farm.
