Porsche is an Austrian/German make founded by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche in
1948. Dr. Porsche was also heavily involved in Volkswagen. He
was arrested and jailed by the French during the second World War.
An Italian company eventually paid handsomely to have him released so that
he would be free to build a sports car for them.
Porsche built two-seater sports cars under his own name. With their rear engines, they had some similarities to the Volkswagen. When Porsche died in 1952, just four years after building his first car, his son, Ferry, continued his Father's work. After Ferry took over the company, the Porsche featured bigger engines and more power. One of the first Porsches Ferry built was the 356, which was replaced in 1964 by the most popular Porsche ever—the 911. Over the years the 911 became more and more upmarket; by 1977 it featured a turbocharger and was one of the fastest cars available. Because the company could not survive on one upmarket car alone, it introduced the less expensive 924 in 1976. The Boxter was another model introduced in the 1990s. Today, in addition to sports cars, Porsche also offers the four-wheel drive Cayenne.
