Suzuki started off making motorcycles and scooters, and didn't enter
the car market until 1955. It wasn't until the 1980s that Suzuki
began to seriously export their vehicles.
The first Suzuki automobile was the Suzulite, a typical Japanese micro-car designed to benefit from Japanese tax laws and appeal to budget-conscious drivers. While Suzuki introduced several models after that, it wasn't until 1977 that Europeans were first introduced to Suzuki. The rear-engined SC1000 Whizkid was one of the first Suzukis exported, followed by the popular four-wheel drive Jimny. Suzuki eventually became known for its smaller four-wheel drive vehicles, and models such as the Vitara, Grand Vitara, and X90, and Wagon R+ became popular. In addition to its SUVs, Suzuki has also manufactured a number of hatchbacks, including the Swift, the Alto, the Liana, and the MPV.
