In 1972, a Volkswagen model became the world's most popular car when its
Beetle outsold the Ford Model T.
Volkswagen was started in Germany during 1936. The first Volkswagens were built by Ferdinand Porsche at the request of Adolph Hitler, who wanted a "people's car". Volkswagens were unique because their engine was placed in the rear, while the storage trunk was placed in front. While the car was first introduced during the war, production really began to boom during the 1950s. In 1951 the five millionth Beetle was made, and after that more than a million Beetles were built every year. While the Beetle went out of production in 1979, other popular models like the Passat, Golf, Scirocco, Polo, Rabbit, and Jetta were introduced. After the turn of the century, a new Beetle was introduced, and while the nostalgic lines of the old Beetle were retained, it had a 21st-century flair. Today, VW makes a wide range of automobiles, from sedans and coupes to four-wheel drive vehicles and people carriers.
