![]() Rolls-Royce, despite their inaccessibility to the general public, may be one of the most well-known cars around. The story of how the Rolls-Royce was developed is an interesting one. Henry Royce had bought a Decauville car, and disliked it so much that he decided to build his own car. The resulting car so impressed the Honorable Charles Rolls, that he offered to sell all the cars that Royce could make. And that's how Rolls-Royce came to be. Initial Rolls-Royces were entirely custom built; it wasn't until after World War II that the make had a standard, factory-built body. Thus the Rolls started out a luxury car, and has never deviated. While the Rolls-Royce originated in Britain, it was first exported to the United States in 1919. In 1998, as the company struggled to keep its upmarket brand afloat, BMW gained control and rescued the marque.
